One day as I was standing drinking coffee and eating a pastry after the service in the church I used to attend, a brother standing next to me doing the same, looked at me and out of nowhere asked me this question:
“Why don’t we see healing in the church?”
My first thought was “Excuse me? Lord, You put him here, didn’t You?” and I smiled. Mind you, I had never met him before and this church was not all that big.
So I responded “That’s because you are in the church.”
He looked at me puzzled and said “What do you mean by that? I don’t understand.”
So I enlightened him and said “People in the church don’t believe in healing. That’s why you don’t see healing in the church.”
He rebutted “That doesn’t make any sense. Of course the church believes in healing!”
“No, they don’t.” I chimed back, “I have to go outside the church to see healing and I see it almost every day out on the street.”
Bewildered he exclaimed “How can you say that you only see healing outside the church? What do you mean by that?”
He was like the man that lay by the sheep gate pool of Bethesda not understanding Jesus when He asked him “Wilt thou be made whole?” (John 5:6) only believing that his healing would come by the angel’s moving of the water.
I decided that some show & tell would be appropriate to answer his question and to bring my point across. “I’ll prove it to you. Do you have any pain in your body right now?”
“Yes!” he said “My shoulder is hurting terribly.” I guess that was what had prompted his original question.
“Which one?” I asked.
“This one.” he said pointing to his right shoulder.
“Okay, watch this.” I said as I laid my hand on his shoulder, “In Jesus name I command the spirit of infirmity and all pain to get out of this shoulder NOW! Shoulder be healed and made whole in Jesus name. Now, do what you couldn’t do before.”
“What do you want me to do?” he asked quizzical.
I instructed him “Move your shoulder around and try to make it hurt.” as I started rotating my right arm around to show him what to do.
He started rotating his arm and didn’t say a word. He kept rotating it with a blank stare and did not say anything and was just gazing into the distance. I knew what was happening so I just let him marinate in it for a bit. After a few minutes of silence and rotating, I asked him “So, where is the pain?”
“I don’t understand.” he said flabbergasted, “I know it was hurting just a few minutes ago.” as he kept rotating his arm to try to find any sign of pain left and could not find any.
“You just experienced healing in the church.” I finally declared to him.
“But I don’t understand it. How can this be?” he said with a baffled look rotating his shoulder still trying to find the pain that was there only minutes ago.
I tried to explain it to him “All I did is what the bible tells us to do to lay hands in Jesus name and I did and you were healed and you have now experienced healing in the church for yourself.”
I could tell that he was totally undone, grasping at straws to try to make sense of it all and in a daze, he simply walked off with his cup of coffee in his hand and did ne’er utter another word.
I was at that church for at least another year or so and he never spoke a word about it, nor sought me out to ask me what had happened or how this healing had occurred and as far as I know, avoided me at all times. I never saw or spoke to him again.
Why did he react this way? I honestly don’t know. Perhaps it tilted his brain. All the modern day begging-God-for-healing church doctrines of men were suddenly flushed down the toilet in a single moment when the healing power of Jesus invaded a life filled with sacred cows of learned and treasured ear-tickling teachings by corporately dressed men behind fancy pulpits seeking to please an audience of meek following sheep while collecting their tithes and playing church to keep them asleep.
That was one of my reasons for leaving that church. They did not believe the reality that God’s word has not changed from the day it was written and that it contains the same Holy Ghost power today that Jesus used in His day to do His mighty works and that raised Him from the dead and quickens our mortal bodies (Romans 8:11).
How did they skip reading the part in their bibles where Jesus commanded us to do the same works that He did? Agreed, He did preface it with “he who is believing in me“.
Verily, verily, I say to you, he who is believing in me, the works that I do–that one also shall do, and greater than these he shall do, because I go on to my Father; and whatever ye may ask in my name, I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son; if ye ask anything in my name I will do [it].
