For with God nothing shall be impossible.     Luke 1:37

Sounds good but do you believe it?  I mean really and truly believe it? 

Because even if you don’t, it is still true but it then simply does not apply to you.  Why not? 

Because of your unbelief.

The disciples had this same problem.  Jesus and the three main disciples, Peter, James and John, had departed to go to the Mount of Transfiguration, when the father of a boy who was lunatic came to ask the remaining disciples if they could cast the evil spirit out of his son. 

But they could not.

Mind you this was after Jesus had sent them out to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead and tell them that the kingdom had come near to them.  They had already cast out devils before so how come they could not do it now?

Because of their unbelief. 

That’s what Jesus told them in no uncertain terms when they asked Him.

Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Matthew 17:19-20

Even before this, Jesus answered the father of the boy who had asked Him if he could do anything to have compassion on them and help them.

— Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. Mark 9:23

The operative term here to make all things possible is to believe that they are possible.  All things are possible to him that believes.  Even the impossible.

If you believe that all things are possible with God then they are.  If you don’t believe that something is possible, then it is not possible with you.  You have left God out of the equation.  Rather, you are only believing what is impossible with men.

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.  Matthew 19:26

And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.  Mark 10:27

And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.  Luke 18:27

Jesus told his disciples this after telling them that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.  Their response was one of utter amazement: “Who then can be saved?”

A Jewish proverb commonly used to express great difficulty or impossibility. In the large gates in the city walls were small narrow ones, each called the needle’s eye, through which a camel might enter kneeling down if he were unloaded.  (Dake Study Bible Notes)

A rich merchant arriving at the city after the main gate was closed, would have to unload his camel of all its treasures and make the camel crawl through the eye of the needle.  This was the difficulty Jesus was referring to.  One who is wealthy in this world would need to unload himself of his trust in all of his riches and crawl to the cross for his salvation and not trust in his riches to save him. 

In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus confirmed that all things are possible to God.

And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. Mark 14:36

The possibility of avoiding the cross was indeed possible, but not without forfeiting God’s plan to save man through the cross, the purpose for which Jesus had come.  The Father’s will is what Jesus surrendered to, not the possibility of avoiding the cross.  He was willing to lay down His life for us, His friends.

This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.  John 15:12-13

When Jesus had cursed the fig tree for not producing fruit for him, it withered and died from the root.  When Peter saw this the next day, he could not contain himself and exclaimed:

Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.  Mark 11:21

Jesus responded to him:

And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.  Mark 11:22-24

In these verses Jesus tells us how to make the impossible possible :

1. 1. Have faith in God – Lit. have the faith of God
   2. Speak to the mountain
   3. Tell it what you want it to do
   4. Do not doubt in your heart
   5. Believe that those things which you speak come to pass
   6. Then you shall have whatsoever you speak
   7. Whatever things you desire, when ye pray, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them.

Literally, “Have the faith of God.” Such is possible or it would not be a command. Man was created with God’s faith but doubt entered in at the fall (Gen. 3:1-7). Faith is restored in the new birth and if normally exercised and maintained it will grow to fullness and power (Rom. 1:5,17; 10:17; Gal. 2:20; Col. 1:23; 2:6-7 2Th. 1:3; 2Pet. 1:1-5)  (Dake Study Bible Notes)

So from this day forward, watch your mouth and start speaking only those things that you want and stop speaking what you don’t want.  Believe that you speak as the oracles of God (1 Peter 4:11) and that the word which you speak does not return unto you empty but has accomplished that which you desired and it has prosperously effected the very thing whereto you sent it.

“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”  Isaiah 55:11
