Not the Hearers but the Doers are Justified

Doing God's Work

(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. Romans 2:13

It is ironic that so many self professed believers refuse to do the work that God the Father and Jesus our Lord have assigned to us.

It is like they have never heard this before or rings as a foreign language in their ears.  Or they claim that this work was for the disciples only and does not apply to them for today with which they right away exclude themselves as disciples, right?

Well, what exactly is this work?

Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.  Matthew 10:8

And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.  Luke 10:9

And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.  Mark 16:17-18

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.  Matthew 20:19-20

Right here in this last verse they are corrected because “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” nullifies their inaction but instead confirms that as believers they are to teach the new believers to observe, to keep and to perform whatsoever Jesus had commanded them.  To observe does not mean to just watch but to keep Jesus’ teaching alive and from dying out throughout all generations.  In other words: for all believers to do the works.

Keeping a religiosity of darkening a church door and warming a pew every Sunday may be considered “hearing” the word, that is if the word is truly being preached, but it is not considered doing the work of the gospel.  Many will agree that it does not constitute “doing” the work.  But merely their agreement does not justify them without any action on their part.

We are not talking about doing any work to achieve salvation but doing work after we are saved to be justified and righteous in the eyes of God.  Read it here in a literal translation:

for not the hearers of the Law [are] righteous before God, but the doers of the Law will be declared righteous. Romans 2:13 (LSV)

Many may seek to justify themselves by stating that they bring their tithe check to church every Sunday.  This may fund some of the work but is no substitute for Jesus direct commands of doing the work and not being a hearer only.

The bible states that those who are only hearers of the word, deceive themselves.

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. James 1:22-24

How so?  They deceive and rob themselves of all the blessings and rewards that come with being a doer of the word.  They deceive themselves out of the rewards for doing the work.  Not just in heaven but here also.

Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, but he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.  Mark 10:28-31

In other words: what you sow you will reap a hundred times your investment in this life and the next.

Somehow those that claim to be believers do not believe their inaction has any effect on their walk with the Lord.  Wrong.  God may not be a respecter of persons but He is a respecter of faith.  And lack of doing the works is lack of faith.

How so?  It takes faith to do the works; to heal the sick, to cleanse the lepers, to cast out demons and to raise the dead and tell them that the kingdom of God has come near unto them.  Warming a pew takes no faith at all.  Church therefor should be a refreshing place to recharge your battery from performing the work all week.

“But I bring people to church so they can hear the message and become born again.”  Look, shepherds do not birth sheep, sheep birth sheep.  It is not a pastors job to get your guest saved.  It is your job.

Just as it is your job to heal them by the laying on of hands and the prayer of faith.  This is the gospel.  Anything less is playing games with what you were entrusted.  He has entrusted you and empowered you with the kingdom right now.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. John 14:12

And signs will accompany those believing these things: they will cast out demons in My Name; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they may drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the ailing, and they will be well.  Mark 16:17-18 (LSV)

behold, I give to you the authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and on all the power of the enemy, and nothing by any means will hurt you; Luke 10:19 (LSV)

Do you want to be justified and righteous in the eyes of God?  Then do the works.  That is His word and His commandment.

But what happens if we claim to have faith but do not have any works?  Some will dismiss this message altogether because they cling to the unjust doctrine that their salvation is “by faith alone”.  They are scared to death to think anything otherwise.  Read what James, the half brother of Jesus, has to say about this.

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?  James 2:14

But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?  James 2:20

Here is what Finis Jennings Dake had to say about this:

Are you willing to be instructed as to the nature of true saving faith?

You will be judged for your willingness to obey or for your stubbornness for kicking against the goads like Saul.  Your call.

I pray you make the right decision.

  1. Gd day, I’d like to request prayer for my son in law Gabby who recently spent 5 days in hospital for high blood pressure and heart related issues.  He is about 45 yrs old. He and family (3) recently migrated to Canada from Trinidad. He studies and work. His wife, my daughter Evie, has a work permit but needs a job there. The hospital bill is also expensive. Praying for favor. I know God is able to completely heal and provide. Blessings.Kathy H

    1. Hi Kathy,

I am responding to your prayer request for your son in law Gabby and I agree with your request.
No problem.  With God all things are possible (Matt 19:26. Luke 1:37, Mark 10:27, Mark 9:23).  Only believe (Mark 5:36).
Please lay your hands on his body and agree with me by commanding the following loud and strong:

“Thank you Father that you love (name) and that You don’t want to see him suffer one more minute because Jesus already paid for him with the stripes on His back.  Now in Jesus name I command the spirit of infirmity to get out of this body NOW!  Get out and stay out!  I hereby cancel the world’s report and declare the report of the Lord that you shall live and not die and declare the works of the Lord.  I command new kidneys and a new liver and complete restoration from head to toe in Jesus name.  So be it!  Amen!”

Now tell him to do what he could not do before.  Have him get up and walk and keep walking until all symptoms are gone.
Tell him to keep praising Jesus and keep moving until all mobility is completely restored and to keep thanking Him that he has received his healing (Mark 11:24, 1 Peter 2:24).
When we agreed in prayer the life of Jesus went into him and the power of the Holy Spirit is doing His operation in him.
Be sure to have him go and do what he could not do before and keep doing it until all symptoms are gone.  I expect a great report!

Matthew 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
